Corporate investigation: whistleblowing: early warning signals
In his position, the executive was able to award large property contracts through
agents who then paid kickbacks to a company he had set up with his wife. A widespread
fraud was uncovered that linked a number of property agents. The executive had
benefited by over £1 million, while his improper dealings had cost his employer
about £6 million.
This early whistleblowing notification enabled the retailer to protect its position,
contain its losses and make substantial recoveries. It was able to provide evidence
to assist the police in the prosecution of the former executive, who received
a custodial sentence, as well as pursue actions against several of the property
agents involved in the fraud.
